The breath connects the mind and the body - and in this connection, that moment of stillness,
there is always an element of truth. The work of Eleonore Sok situates itself in that moment, while
holding on to the tension that arises between knowing and not knowing.
As viewers, we are immersed in moments charged with immediacy and compulsion. Like taking
a deep breath, winding a coil tighter and tighter, or drawing an arrow back on its bowstrings -
energy converges - it feels dangerous and exciting.
Drawing from deep internal resources,
Eleonore uses the body, her own or that of other
performers, to investigate femininity, desire, memory, and history. Her work, while firmly rooted
in the now, simultaneously seeks something outside itself. There is a sense of anticipation, yet it
remains grounded in self-awareness, where humor and absurdity anchor us to the physicality of
the human experience.
Through the interplay of body, memory, and playfulness, Eleonore invites us to inhabit a space
where vulnerability meets strength. We hold our breath, remain present, and dwell in the moment
of tension, exploring the truth that reveals itself in the spaces in between.
'In Between Breaths' brings together a powerful collection of images created by Eleonore Sok, both as a performer and in collaboration with other performance artists including New Cambodian Artists and Eric Ellul. These works highlight the intersection of performance and visual art, where the subconscious is actualized through physical embodiment.
